Public and Population Health

Various public and environmental health services are provided by Environmental Health Officers employed by Local Government to prevent the occurrence and spread of disease.

Many environmental factors that could pose a risk to health are constantly monitored. These include:

• waste disposal;
• water and air pollution;
• food contamination;
• wastewater disposal; and
• mosquito and other insect control.

Local Government perform many of these services and are best placed to deal with enquiries.

OTHER PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

There are many other public and environmental health services including:

• infectious and communicable disease monitoring and treatment;
• immunisation;
• injury prevention;
• hereditary diseases;
• radiation health;
• drug and poison control; and
• pesticide safety.

HEALTH AWARENESS

A number of health awareness projects provide information on preventing disease, health problems, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Some of these include:

• Smoking and Health Campaign and QUIT LINE;
• Nutrition and Physical Activity Campaign;
• Injury Prevention; and
• Alcohol and Other Drugs.

Many of these services listed, as well as Local Government Authorities, can provide information and community and workplace education to raise health awareness and prevent environmental risks.
