There is a comprehensive range of public mental health services. Mental health care is provided for children, adolescents, adults and older people.

Services are provided through community mental health units, hospitals and community health centres.

There is also a wide network of non-government organisations not listed in this directory that provide many important mental health services with assistance from the State Government.

General practitioners are able to help people with mental illness and make referrals to specialist mental health services when needed.

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT SERVICES

Various services are available for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioural and learning problems and their families. Services include assessment, diagnosis, consultation and therapy.

COMMUNITY TREATMENT AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES

Community based mental health services are spread throughout the metropolitan area and in country locations. These clinics and centres have professional staff including psychiatrists, social workers, mental health nurses, clinical psychologists and occupational therapists to provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and ongoing support.

IN-PATIENT SERVICES AND OTHER MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

In-patient units provide in-hospital treatment for people with a mental illness on a short-term basis and help them return to the community. Other assistance for people with mental illness, including older people, is provided by a range of mental health services, hospitals and community health centres. Services include:

• respite care for families and carers;
• support services and care at home;
• self care training; and
• counselling for families.
